signs winter is approaching…

Sign #1 would have to be that Granville Island Brewing has put out their Lions Winter ale again and as I remember from years past, it’s tasty — oh so very tasty.

Sign #2 would be that I noticed a Yule Log video has hit the torrent sites for download (which I’m currently doing) so that I can have my very own “fireplace” to keep me warm — literally. The plasma kicks off an amazing amount of heat. Love that 1st Gen technology.

Election Results

Well, well, well… another minority government for the Conservatives and pretty much nothing has changed. Looking at the pretty coloured map from CBC, you’d think that It’d be a Tory, then NDP government, but of course the fucked up electoral riding system we have here says that in fact it’s a Tory, Liberal, Bloc Quebecois, and then NDP government. Makes sense, eh??

So here’s the breakdown:

Conservative 135 seats 37.42%
Liberal 71 seats 26.66%
Bloc 47 seats 10.12%
NDP 30 seats 17.97%

I love that weird little quirk, don’t you??

Next topic… voter turnout. CBC isn’t saying yet about the turnout but I find it depressing. Doing the math real quick and dirty, I see that 13% of BC turned out to vote. That number is probably wrong as I’m not taking into account voter age, etc. Just using census #’s from July 1 divided by the number of ballots. Still. 13%?? I’m hoping it’s more like 25%, adjusting for proper voter numbers, but even so, that’s sad. Where the hell is everyone???

K… blood pressure rising. time to find some mindless entertainment to leech away the bad thoughts (and the good thoughts… actually, any thoughts. Bah!!

Vote 2008

Oh crap!! It’s that time again. Tomorrow morning everybody gets to mark their choice and take another roll of the dice on getting competent federal leadership.

Personally, I’m not hopeful for any of the parties. Conservative, Liberal, or New Democrats. It’s just the same BS being spouted over and over again. However, I do believe in voting. If you don’t vote, you shouldn’t have the right to bitch. And everyone knows how I like to bitch…

So, here’s what to read in order to be informed — well, better informed, anyway. Don’t forget to tick one of the boxes tomorrow so you too can bitch and complain about those rat bastards in office.

just a little off

Trying to decide if I am in fact slowly going crazy. Slowly going crazy. Craaaaazy. Am I? I am? Maybe. Not sure. Rambling, talking to yourself… those are signs. Mind you, it could be the cold meds too. Undecided. Sure. Nice warm jacket, padded walls. Happy place, happy place. Sleep and really good meds.

All of the above are gooood. Goooood.

especially the sleep.

deadly concern

Dihydrogen monoxide (DHMO) is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and kills uncounted thousands of people every year. Most of these deaths are caused by accidental inhalation of DHMO, but the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide do not end there. Prolonged exposure to its solid form causes severe tissue damage.

Symptoms of DHMO ingestion can include excessive sweating and urination, and possibly a bloated feeling, nausea, vomiting and body electrolyte imbalance. For those who have become dependent, DHMO withdrawal means certain death.

Dihydrogen monoxide:

  • is also known as hydroxl acid, and is the major component of acid rain /lilicontributes to the “greenhouse effect.”
  • may cause severe burns.
  • contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape.
  • accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals.
  • may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes.
  • has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients.

Contamination Is Reaching Epidemic Proportions!
Quantities of dihydrogen monoxide have been found in almost every stream, lake, and reservoir in America today. But the pollution is global, and the contaminant has even been found in Antarctic ice. DHMO has caused millions of dollars of property damage in the Midwest, and recently California.

Despite the danger, dihydrogen monoxide is often used:

  • as an industrial solvent and coolant.
  • in nuclear power plants.
  • in the production of styrofoam.
  • as a fire retardant.
  • in many forms of cruel animal research.
  • in the distribution of pesticides. Even after washing, produce remains contaminated by this chemical.
  • as an additive in certain “junk-foods” and other food products.

Companies dump waste DHMO into rivers and the ocean, and nothing can be done to stop them because this practice is still legal. The impact on wildlife is extreme, and we cannot afford to ignore it any longer!

The Horror Must Be Stopped!
The American government has refused to ban the production, distribution, or use of this damaging chemical due to its “importance to the economic health of this nation.” In fact, the navy and other
military organizations are conducting experiments with DHMO, and designing multi-billion dollar devices to control and utilize it during warfare situations. Hundreds of military research facilities receive
tons of it through a highly sophisticated underground distribution network. Many store large quantities for later use.

It’s Not Too Late!
Act NOW to prevent further contamination. Find out more about this dangerous chemical. What you don’t know can hurt you and others throughout the world.

programming

Wil Wheaton says:

Around 1981 or 82, I learned to program - if you could call it that - on the Atari 400,
copying programs out of magazines, one uncertain finger at a time. I
also learned the proper way to cuss out a computer when I’d miss a
comma or make some other mistake, getting nothing more than SYNTAX
ERROR for my hours of hard work. Guess which skill still serves me
today?

He and I are sympatico in this… he’s only got 3-4 years on me and I was using a sweet Vic20. Good times.

online storage sites

Two sites that offer up a decent amount of storage for free. Of course, because it’s free, who know how long they’ll be around, but whatever. Is still cool…

erk it’s morning

Actually, I’ve been alive and moving since 7 this morning. Sick as a dog, but now fully hydrated thanks to the pot of coffee I’ve consumed. Functional too. Popping the cold meds to force the bod to comply.

Off for another day on-site soon — this time the 34th floor. Should be amusing if not downright entertaining.

Oh, and a further update on the glasses. They shipped friday from Hong Kong. I’m hoping for a week to get here. More likely is that it’ll be 2 weeks. I can hope though.

weekend

Friday night, did some calling around and ended up going out to Lougheed Mall and buying an Xbox. Brought it home, did a bunch of checking to see if it had already been modded. No such luck. Saturday morning, went into work, modified and tweaked the programming for a lecture theatre. Worked further on the current bane of my existence program — still not done. Late afternoon, chopped apart two cables and soldered them together in what is supposedly the right configuration to add USB support to the xbox so I can transfer a few files onto the xbox in order to start the softmod process. Came home, realized I needed to actually have a functional controller in order to do anything, wander back to the mall to buy a breakaway cable to replace the one I chopped up. Discovered I had fucked up the soldering (hmm, ground isn’t important anyway, is it???). Made dinner, watched a movie, passed out. Woke up at 10:15, realized I wasn’t in the mood to fuck with it further, went back to bed.

Today…. Back to the office. Program some more on the bane program. Re-solder the connector, this time with grounding. Re-attempt to get xbox to detect and recognize the usb. If all goes well, I’ll be able to transfer the files over late today and get my xbox well on its way to become a media extender. No more switching monitors. Mmm… I can’t wait.

glasses update

So, Zenni emailed me yesterday to clarify my prescription because I screwed up when I was entering the values. I am stoked and impressed. Makes me feel even better about ordering from them now. Of course, this means they haven’t made or shipped the glasses yet. That’s a downer. But soon… Soon!!! I shall have new glasses. And that has me beyond excited. I think I shall pee my pants when they arrive.

glasses

It’s time. Mark needs a new pair of glasses badlly.

While cleaning up and re-arranging the apartment yesterday I came across an old pair of glasses and put them on. Aside from the blurry vision, I noticed just how amazingly clear they were. Put on my current pair all cloudy. Back to the old pair — cloudy. Went wow. Then I realized that I’ve had these glasses for 5 years. Methinks it’s time….

Checked my benefits plan and discovered I have a check-up with an optometrist available to me and some new glasses (though not nearly enough for what I’d like to buy. So now I’m hunting through yellow pages looking for an optometrist nearby and I’ll be going in for an appointment sometime soon.

For the glasses, I’m pondering, pondering. On the one hand, I can get them from a storefront, any number of which are nearby. They all, however, are pricey pricey. On the other hand, I could order the glasses from a Canadian website and get what I think are going to be a decent set and at a reasonable price. The downside for doing that is that they don’t get fitted for me.

Decisions, decisions…

Tower o’ Power

Pondering a furniture purchase to clean up the rat’s nest of cables and crap in around my desk. Oh yes… It’s time I went to a rack.

The shelf units I’m torn about… I think it’ll really depend on what kind of weight they can carry and whether I can get away with a couple U3’s and a U1 (and the price difference between using those or the SH’s).

As I mentioned above, the plan is to use this to completely clean up and hide the rat’s nest. Everything contained into one nice package. I can even add a smoked glass door if I want. Plus, it gives me a place to put the printer. Handy, that. Now, I’ve already got a price figured out which I’m obviously not going to share publicly as it’s not exactly what you’d pay… All in all, it’s reasonable. And it leaves just enough room for my future expansion plan

saturday morning

Whee!!! saturday!!! morning!!!! early!!!!

Was up at 6am again today. Admittedly, I did crawl into bed at 10 last night and was lights out by 10:45. Finished the book I was re-reading. Now looking for something new. The list is long and I can’t decide what I want.

Currently listening to CBC via the online version of Sirius Radio (Sirius 137), I having gotten a radio last weekend while in the Loops. Trying to decide if I actually want to keep it running past the month I’m currently signed up for. Is kinda handy but…. Only thing I’d miss is the Blue Collar radio. That’s funny right there.

CBC radio one is talking about military advertising/recruiting this morning. Show was called “The Age of Persuasion“. Was kinda interesting.

New browser version has me all a’tingle today. Installed Firefox 3 RC1 and I’ll admit to being rather impressed. Messing with Scribefire as well, which I’m really liking too. Currently pounding out this entry using it and I kinda like it. Cool shit.

Already read the paper this morning, drank my pot of coffee. Trying to crank up the energy to gather my laundry and get it hauled off to the laundry place. Later I’m doing coffee downtown, I think. Then at some point I’ll be sitting down to experience Indiana Jones. Mmmm.

*sigh*

Downloaded a “All 90’s” album tonight and I’m currently going through it and recognizing the tunes and remembering the first time I heard them.  Makes me feel all nostalgic and shit.   For example… The Sign by Ace of Base.  I remember bouncing along to the tune on the dance floor at Uncle Charlie’s back during the summer of ‘93.  That was 13 years ago.  Ya, do the math.  Then comes along Rhythm of the Night from Corona… Remember that one too.  Remember when that was a huge-popular song.  I can still taste the swill they served masquerading as draft beer during College Night.

Hee hee… Mr. Vain.  That was like 1990.  Same with I’m Too Sexy.  Ahhhh… memories.  *sniffle*  I sorta miss those days.  Carefree looking back on them.  No need to balance work and life.  Back when getting homework done was the major concern and passing the next quiz was actually important.  Sorry… I’m getting all teary-eyed now.

Haddaway…  Remember her?  Ya.  I’m quickly coming to the conclusion that I’m too fucking old now.

However, all that aside, I live in Vancouver (Burnaby… metro Vancouver, piss off).  I have a reasonable apartment (only 528 square feet as I recently discovered) and I have a decent paying job.  I have few real needs in my life at moment — most everything is decently in hand.  Hell, I even have an Ipod!!  All must be all right in my world!!

whimper

Well, the dining set has been completely removed and the freezer has been humped up the stairs and installed in it’s place.  The 4′x6′ sheet of plywood and the shelving unit remain to be removed but I don’t think I can handle any more today.  The muscles are screaming “Mercy!!!” to me like the crowd at a beheading, pleading for a rest.  Laundry has also been hauled off to be done, dishes are running through their cycle at the moment.  I now think I shall hunt for the replacement dining set.
